Summary of the 3rd ASEAN-United Kingdom Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) on 07 March 2024, at the ASEAN Secretariat

On Thursday, 07 March 2024, the 3rd ASEAN-United Kingdom Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) was held at the ASEAN Secretariat. The meeting was co-chaired by the Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to ASEAN Latifah Zaini, and the UK Ambassador to ASEAN Sarah Tiffin.

ASEAN and the UK discussed their cooperation and progress across the three ASEAN Community pillars. Both sides highlighted substantial progress in implementing the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action (POA) (2022-2026). They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing their partnership.

They took note of Lao PDR’s 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship. The UK informed of its five flagship programmes including: (i) Supporting the Advancement of Girls Education; (ii) ASEAN-UK Economic Integration Programme; (iii) ASEAN-UK Green Transition Fund; (iv) ASEAN-UK Health Security Partnership; and (v) ASEAN-UK Women, Peace and Security.

ASEAN and the UK also welcomed the launch of Women in STEM Scholarships, and the UK’s plan to launch the ASEAN Chevening Scholarship in July this year.

They agreed to strengthen existing cooperation while exploring cooperation in the areas of maritime security; cybersecurity; trade and investment green finance; sustainable infrastructure, supply chain resilience; financial services; digital transformation; climate change; biodiversity protection; clean energy transition; food security; education; health; WSP; women empowerment; STEM; youth; culture; IAI; and people-to-people contact.

Moreover, both sides underlined the importance of four priority areas outlined in the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP); including maritime cooperation and economic integration. The meeting also welcomes the ASEAN-UK Joint Statement on Connectivity to be adopted at the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference Plus One Session in July this year.
