On Tuesday, 10th September 2024, the ASEAN-UK Young Leaders Initiative (ASEANUK-YLI), supported by the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies (CCRS), hosted a roundtable discussion on "Climate-linked Heat Stress in the Cambodian Economy: New Methods, Concepts, and Insights." The discussion featured Dr. Laurie Parsons, Reader in Human Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, and Dr. Pratik Mishra, Human Geographer at King's College London. The session was moderated by Mr. Chhuon Vanndasambath, General Coordinator of ASEANUK-YLI.
During the roundtable, CCRS researchers, ASEANUK-YLI Team and guest speakers discussed the economic and health impacts of climate-linked heat stress, particularly on individuals working in the textile, construction, and delivery sectors. They also addressed the impact of heat stress on productivity. The speakers shared their studies on how to address these issues with feasible, budget-friendly, and workable methods. However, some challenges remain, as the recommendations require support and implementation from employers and government regulations.
We would like to thank Ambassador Dominic Williams for introducing us to Dr. Laurie and Pratik and providing us with the opportunity to organize this insightful roundtable discussion.
