Interview with Cambodianess: UK Zero-Duties Part-Offset US Tariffs on Cambodia

Our General Coordinator, Chhuon Vanndasambath, shared views with Cambodianess on the UK's Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), its importance to Cambodia's economy and job employment. He also discussed how this scheme plays a role in Trump's recent tariff of 36% on Cambodia.


[...] Chhuon Vanndasambath, Deputy Director of the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies (CCRS), said that the DCTS is crucial for Cambodia's development, as it aims to assist the country in achieving its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income nation by 2030.


However, he acknowledged that this preference would not offset the impact of the U.S. 36 percent tariff because trade between Cambodia and the US is larger than that between Cambodia and the UK.


“Although the UK offers zero-tariff preferences, compensating for the effects of the high tariff rate is still challenging for Cambodia,” he said.


“It seems to be a small gap to fill the big gap, but at least it helps make the gap smaller.” [...]
